| At the heart of the Loma Linda
University (LLU) campus stands The
Good Samaritan sculpture, a compelling visual representation
of the New Testament parable of compassion and of the LLU
community’s sacrificial spirit of helping those in need
of healing.
The LLU community was officially founded in 1905 by the Seventh-day
Adventist Church and currently includes more than 4,000 enrolled
students, 30,000 living alumni, 1,000 full-time faculty, 600
faculty physicians, and varying numbers of affiliated physicians,
researchers, and administrators as well the broad public they
selflessly serve. Diversified by culture, ethnicity, and vocational
specialty, the LLU health sciences community is unified in
its unique mission to further the healing and teaching ministry
of Jesus Christ “to make man whole” by providing
excellence in health care, education, and research.
Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) operates some
of the largest clinical programs in the United States in areas
such as neonatal care and outpatient surgery and is recognized
as the international leader in infant heart transplantation
and proton treatments for cancer. With approximately 600 physicians
on staff, the institution admits more than 35,000 inpatients
and serves more than 750,000 outpatients annually. As the
only tertiary-care hospital in the area, LLUMC is the only
Level 1 regional trauma center for Inland Southern California.
All physicians appointed to the medical staff of the internationally-acclaimed
Medical Center also serve on the Loma Linda University (LLU)
faculty and teach or undertake research with the LLU School
of Medicine through Loma Linda University Health Care’s
(LLUHC) Faculty Practice Plan.
As the LLU community works toward bringing wholeness to humanity
through health science innovation, the wellbeing of the LLU
community is itself nurtured by on-campus spiritual and ministry
centers as well as a pervasive atmosphere that promotes balance
within LLU community life.
